Retention Modules are used to fasten a CPU cooler on the motherboard, rather than directly on the CPU. This has become necessary because the heatsinks were bigger and heavier. This allowed the CPU socket provide the coolers no secure hold more than its plastic snap, but this is ensured by the retention module again. On the motherboard are predetermined drillings into which the retention module can lock.
