The Socket 940 is a processor socket from the manufacturer AMD, which has the PGA ZIF type. This socket was introduced for the first time on the market in 2003 and introduced the first socket for the 64-bit AMD K8 processors. In order for the first time was also the HyperTransport (HT), a point-to-point bus protocol, introduced.
Socket 940 achieved clock frequencies between 400 MHz and 1000 MHz and is thus intended for high-end desktops, workstations and servers. It is compatible with the processors of the AMD Opteron series and Athlon 64 FX (FX-51 and FX 53). Over the years, Socket 940 has developed to the exclusive AMD Opteron Socket. In 2006, Socket 904 was substituted for the Opteron series almost completely from Socket F. An exception is the Opteron 1xxx processors.
